In 1904, General C.R. de Wet established a settlement
on the banks of the Renoster River for underprivileged whites. In 1926
this settlement achieved municipal rights and became the town of
Koppies.
Another central figure in the settlement of the town was
Emily Hobhouse.
Concerned about the economic and personal losses of
the Boer people, throughout the Anglo Boer war, she promoted the
idea of home-industry among the inhabitants of the town. Her vision
and courage was manifested in the Lace school at Phillipolis. Koppies
Dam and Nature Reserve in the area is the perfect location for water
sports, bird and game viewing. Anglers know this dam as a fishing
paradise.
Several historical places and monuments relating to
the Anglo-Boer War can be visited in Koppies. The town has remained
an important agricultural area in the Northern Free State and during
summer months, the rich harvest from the earth is visible in fertile
fields of mealies, sunflowers and grain.
