Situated in the North-eastern part of the Free State,
in what was traditionally known as the Riemland Area. (Place of
thongs made of animal hides mostly buck). The open savannah is
conducive to abundant wildlife. Conservation in the Heilbron area
is very active and two conservancies, Ghoya Africa and Francolin
Creek include vast tracts of land. Wildlife is returning of its
own accord with a big push by farmers re-establishing species that
belong here naturally.
Heilbron was founded in 1872 because of water available
for man and animal from the strong fountain. LJ Erasmus baptised
the town “Heilbron” that means “source of well being”.
The bigger Heilbron is the collective name for Phiritona,
Saundersville and Heilbron. It has always been a farming community
with a few factories of which Clover SA (previously Heilbron Creamery
and later NCD) shaped the history the most. Traditional farming,
which is still mostly carried out, consists of dairy, maize, wheat,
sorghum, sunflowers, sheep and beef cattle farming.
Heilbron is spreading its wings in a new tourist direction
with four farms trading as wine cellars, several guest lodges in
town and surrounding areas, hunting opportunities, hiking, fishing
and a friendly community providing a holistic package to restore
the soul.
